What to Wear Over a Sleeveless Dress in Summer

Disclosure: AD, this is a sponsored post, however all opinions are 100% my own.

With warmer weather and longer days we are all starting to think about finally changing our summer wardrobe. For me this means choosing pieces which are simple and elegant, don't take much thought to put together and most importantly make me feel good.

Although Summer is the season of sunshine, beach trips, maybe more colourful fashion choices I do worry about flashing my arms and always need a cover-up!

One of the most beloved wardrobe staples for this time of year is the sleeveless dress. You often need to be wearing one as the temperature rises or because you're dressing up for a garden party or lovely brunch. However, even on the warmest days, there are moments when you'd prefer to have a little extra coverage, whether to combat a cool breeze or to add a touch of modesty with long sleeves. So, what do you wear over a sleeveless dress in summer?

From a touch of lace to stylish shawls, we've got you covered with the best options to keep you chic and comfortable. We've always been fans of Cotton Traders who have excellent quality clothing and as a busy mum in her 40s, they tend to have items which suit my lifestyle and tastes. They have just launched a new summer collection so I've checked out which of their current beautiful pieces will work for your summer holidays.

Here you'll find a variety of pretty coverups to complete your outfits in the warmer months and answer your concerns about What to Wear Over a Sleeveless Dress in Summer?

Lace Top

This lace top is charming and I wasn't expecting to find a cover-up which was so extra special. There’s a real joy in combining an elegant lace top and adding to your strappy sleeveless dresses. It has a touch of sophistication and is a great way to lift any outfit whilst making you feel less exposed.

Featuring delicate all-over lace and 3/4 length sleeves, it's very feminine and perfect for summer. The detail around the neckline provides a pretty finishing touch.

You can use it throughout the season layering over dresses or camisoles. Covering the upper arms in hot weather you could leave any cover-up behind or bring one of the popular white denim jackets should the evening be cooler. Available in natural colouring or Red Coral which would work well with black, white or navy summer dresses.

Printed Tie-Waist Top & Camisole

This is our new favourite two piece, giving an overall look of having not tried too hard but still being fabulous! We love that the printed tie-waist top can be worn over a dress or with the camisole for a more casual day out.

With light, flowy fabric it keeps you cool if you want a classic piece without showing bare arms. The flattering shorter sleeves above the wrist mean it suits a variety of occasions, and available in printed blue and white different patterns or plain with the colour Iris so you will find the best option to suit your favourite dresses.

With a tie-waist front to skim any curves this creates simple silhouettes along the body for a relaxed and comfortable fit. The elasticated cuffs are a lovely touch and give the whole outfit an elegant look. I can imagine throwing this over a day dress or even your beach dress and heading to dinner.

Wrinkle Free Short Sleeve Cardigan

What if you just need a classic style cardigan to suit your body type and which is easy to pack and care for? We have found the perfect overlay to your dresses, tops and more this summer.

With pure cotton, easy-care and crease-resistant fabric you won't need an iron. A pretty scoop neck and although it is a sleeved option they are not too long, keeping you cool for the summer months. This is the easiest way to cover up on hot days. The cardigan keeps its overall shape and has some waist definition while complementing our individual personal styles. Available in Red Coral, Artic Blue or Navy you have options for different occasions and to match with your current wardrobe.

Lightweight Devoré Wrap

I could say this lightweight Devoré wrap is a great option for the evening over a more formal dress but actually it works well for for the beach and more. It's an elegant choice with the textured wrap fabric and delicate, tactile devoré print. You won't overheat and will definitely be the best dressed at the pool-side lunch table!

Available in a Light Teal, like jewel colours, intricate threadwork and a relaxed fit. This one-size piece is a must-have for throughout the year. Not only is it breathable in summer, and covers your shoulders with a bit of Bond Girl glamour. It could easily transform in winter as a stunning shawl used with evening dresses or ladies tuxedo trousers. A beautiful wrap which has maximum impact and beats a drapey cardigan!

Printed Kimono Cover-Up

Last but not least is one of our most loved items at Cotton Traders; the Kimono cover-up. With a stunning Japanese-inspired print, it's a statement piece and ideal for covering your sleeveless options this summer.

Add some exotic vibes to your summer break with this lightweight wrap. With a pretty print and silky, woven fabric, edged with a ribbon trim and lovely floaty sleeves. This will be a real talking point wherever you wear it. There are two colour ways; navy with iris flowers or orange with pink flowers and gorgeous white storks. Suiting any different body shapes, it would enhance a plain dress or give a bit of modesty to a sheer top. The perfect choice for summer months and giving a new life to some of your existing wardrobe staples.

We hope you found some great ideas to team up a slip dress or your maxi dresses with something more exciting than a cropped jacket or blazer! Who knew there were so many different ways to match beautiful cover-ups with our sleeveless garments. As someone who likes to cover my shoulders I've found this quite reassuring. We hope you do too.
