Wanting a refresh? Here’s how to update your bedroom on a budget

Is your bedroom looking a little outdated? Perhaps you’re tired of seeing the same decor all the time and want to change things up? Updating your bedroom may sound daunting, especially when you consider the time and money involved. However, it is possible to update your bedroom on a budget, no matter how big or small.

Sometimes it’s as easy as changing up your bed linen, or adding some new art to the wall.

Here are a few ways you can update your bedroom on a budget, from top to bottom.

Freshen up walls with paint

One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways of updating your bedroom is by adding a fresh coat of paint on the wall. If you want to keep it simple, just pick one colour – perhaps something that will neutral calm you and won’t date, or a shade of your favourite colour for something different.

If you want to add a pop of colour, go for a fun accent wall in a bold colour. You can easily paint your bedroom yourself (and even have the kids help) as part of an easy, DIY weekend project. After you’ve selected your colour/s, prepare the bedroom for painting by moving your furniture into another room, taping off the switches and window/s, and sanding and washing the walls. Once this is done, the fun part comes with painting the walls with your chosen colour/s.

Add some fun with a new, coloured sheet set

Your bed is a focal point of your bedroom and is often one of the easiest things to update. Sometimes it’s as simple as updating your linen with a new sheet set. Generally speaking, sheet sets should be replaced every two years.

Lean into relaxation with a neutral-coloured sheet set, creating a clean and inviting look. You can also have some fun with bright colours. When you make your bed, fold the top of your sheet down to show off that small hint of colour! Also try playing with a range of patterns or shapes that contrast or complement your walls. Don’t forget about your other linens from throw pillows to quilt covers – go wild trying different themes!

Add texture with a comfy rug

Now that you’ve added colour to your bedroom, you can add texture with a new comfy rug on your floor.

A well-chosen rug can bring your updated walls and sheet set together, whilst a comfy runner (a long, narrow rug) can fill a vacant floor space between your furniture items.

Whether you go with a comfy area rug or runner, not only will it add colour and texture to your bedroom, but you’ll also reap other rug benefits. It will keep your feet warm during the cooler months, protect the floors from spills and scratches, and keep your bedroom tidier by absorbing dust.

Upgrade your sleep with blackout curtains

If your current curtains are looking a little old and frayed, or you’re simply looking for something new, blackout curtains are a great upgrade for your windows as they come with many benefits.

As well as looking stylish by coming in many colours and designs, blackout curtains also block out light and sound, enable privacy, and reduce your energy costs by controlling insulation. You can find budget-friendly blackout curtains in many department and craft stores for as low as $30. They make a great long-term investment as they are durable.

Upgrade your finishing touches with accessories

Accessories can complete the look and add personality to any bedroom. Easy bedroom accessories to upgrade are your door knob and drawer pulls, which you can do as part of a smaller, easier DIY project.

To change your door knob, all you need is a Phillips Head screwdriver to take out the screws, pull apart the door knob, pull out the latch, and remove the strike plate. You can then choose your new doorknob and install it by repeating the removal process in reverse. Door knobs are budget friendly and you have plenty of options, from polished steel and bronze to crystal.

Upgrading your drawer pulls requires a similar process. You need to remove the old drawer pulls, fill the holes left behind, sand them down, drill new holes for the new pulls, and install them. Similarly to door knobs, you have plenty of stylistic options to choose from.

By freshening up your walls with fresh paint, making your bed more of a focal point with new coloured sheets, adding texture with a comfy rug, investing in curtains that can help you sleep and save money, and upgrading your accessories to complete the new look, you can easily update your bedroom without breaking the bank.

These updates are not only easy and fun, but they’ll last for years to come, and will turn your bedroom into a modern and refreshing personal sanctuary.
