If you are concerned about pests in your home and garden, it can open you up to a whole minefield of information because some pests are good, some are terrible, and some we just don't know what to do with! So let's break it down for you and help you be aware of which pests are actually useful, which aren't, and how you can keep on top of these issues.

Useful Pests

Here we're going to focus on the big three. Firstly, bees are essential for pollination. They play a vital role in the ecosystem, and yes, while they can be a nuisance if they nest in your home, it's vital to remember that while there are DIY pest control solutions, bees are better off being relocated rather than exterminated.

Secondly, spiders are for the most part harmless. Spiders are actually very helpful because they can control other insect populations in your home. If you find there's a fly problem or mosquitoes depending on where you are in the world, spiders are like nature's terminator!

Thirdly, ladybugs are great to look at but are incredibly useful, especially in the garden environment. Ladybugs feed on plant pests such as aphids, making them incredibly beneficial when you're looking to get your garden to thrive.

Pests to Control/Eliminate

There's plenty here. Firstly, rodents like rats or mice can cause significant damage to your property and pose health risks through their droppings. They also have the potential to carry diseases such as salmonella and listeria.

Additionally, while bees can be very useful in the garden, their aggressive counterpart, wasps, can be particularly troublesome in late summer and autumn. These things can be very dangerous for those allergic to them, and this is why pest removal techniques are essential at this juncture.

Ants can be a right royal pain too, and while some ants are harmless, it's species such as the Pharaoh ant that can become a major nuisance, particularly because they contaminate food sources.

Finally, ticks are very hard to come by in places like the UK, but if you're reading this from the US or other countries where ticks are more prominent, you've got to be so careful. Ticks are carriers of Lyme disease and other illnesses. They could pose serious health risks to humans as well as pets.

Simple Pest Management Tips

Whether you are working on your garden or you are just moving into a home, pest management is all about four key components:

  • Conducting regular inspections is vital because this can help you identify and address pest issues as soon as possible.

  • Sealing entry points such as cracks and gaps in the floors, walls, and foundations will prevent pests from entering and ensure that your home is as secure as possible.

  • Keeping your home clean and free of food debris can help reduce your home's attractiveness to pests.

  • Finally, for any serious infestations, you should always seek the support of a professional.

From the good to the bad (and the plain ugly), understanding which pests you should allow and control will help you maintain a healthier and far more balanced home environment.
