The Benefits of School Uniform for Children
/School uniforms are one of those institutions which have really coloured our experience of education. Whether your memories of yours are fond or otherwise, the fact remains that most schools in the UK have specific uniforms for their pupils.
There are many reasons for this and whilst it’s tricky to be certain, it’s thought that the first uniform for schoolchildren was introduced by Christ’s Hospital School in 1552. That uniform is still used today and is almost identical to the way it appeared all those years ago – a long blue coat and knee high, yellow socks.
Many school uniforms include a formal blazer and/or outdoor coat, a school badge and they’re usually made from tough, long-lasting materials. Research suggests that schools which have uniform policies in place benefit from better exam results, less truancy and better behaviour in general.
Reasons for the popularity of school uniforms
Many parents and children alike state that uniforms make them feel proud to be part of their schools. A uniform is a marker, a way of standing out among others – rather than being seen as a way to make everyone the same, it ensures a feeling of camaraderie and community. It evens the playing field so that there is less opportunity for bullying when it comes to fashion.
Students at this independent school in Hampshire for example, are proud of their uniform and the feeling of belonging which it fosters. Many parents also prefer uniforms for their children as it simplifies the process of dressing for school each morning.
There can be no angst over wearing the ‘right’ clothing – everyone is the same.
There’s also the practical element of warm, comfortable clothing which is designed for ease of movement and longevity.
All in all, school uniforms have a positive effect on the children who wear them and on the school community and reputation as a whole.
