Preparing Your Child for Nursery

While seeking out the perfect nursery for your little one, it may feel like no time has passed since you were cradling them in your arms for the very first time. However, with what seems like nothing more than the blink of an eye, here you are wondering how to prepare them for their first day.

I have teamed up with a day nursery in Richmond to offer you some tips on how to get your child in the right frame of mind to embark on this new stage of their life.

Some kids take it all in their stride, wandering into their new nursery with confidence and excitement. Others find it challenging being separated from their parents and it may take some time for them to adjust.

Nobody can predict how their child will react so it’s important that you do everything you can to make the transition as easy as possible for everyone.

Start by increasing the number of playdates they experience so that they become increasingly more familiar with interacting with other children their age. They need to learn how to share toys and take it in turns, otherwise, nursery will come as a big shock to them.

Depending on your child’s age, many nurseries will encourage them to join in with basic tasks like handing out plates at snack time or clearing away toys.

Giving them some tasks like this at home will help them get used to following instructions and assisting adults with certain activities, which will make it feel less daunting when they have to do it at nursery.

The experience will be daunting for you, as well as for your child, but no matter how they react, you need to try your best to stay calm. Use positive terminology when speaking about nursery, as your child will be very receptive to how you respond to this new milestone.
