/Disclosure: AD, this is a sponsored post, however all opinions are 100% my own.
This winter I'm working with Cotton Traders as they have launched a classic and timeless collection with Alex Jones, full of stylish knits and coats. If you're wondering how to level up your style as you head into your 40s, you're not alone. Whether you're no longer looking for formal office attire but don't know what to pick instead. As you step into this new chapter, it’s a great time to embrace your unique style and build a wardrobe that’s equal parts timeless and trendy. Whether you’re dressing for casual outings, professional settings, or special occasions, our guide is packed with style tips to help you look and feel fabulous.
Discovering Your Personal Style Over 40
I've felt it a bit of a struggle trying to figure out what to wear and how to refine my style personality as I've transitioned from London corporate life to working from home, school runs and running a home based business. It's so easy to just end up in jeans with a top that works on a Zoom call!
What I've useful is embracing a mix of natural fabrics, neutral colours, and the odd splash of bright hue that suits my skin tone.
This is also a great time to experiment with a capsule wardrobe, which is a curated selection of clothing items that stand the test of time. This means you are never shifting through too many items each morning as you have fewer pieces but which can all combine as standalone outfits. French women, often admired for their timeless wardrobes, use this method of putting together a chic, simple look which feels effortless.
Wardrobe Staples for Women Over 40
Building a casual wardrobe that works for every season of your life is key and takes away any last minute stress. These staples are versatile and stylish. I love that I don't have to think too hard about what to wear each day.
Skinny Jeans and Wide Leg Jeans
Both styles can be flattering depending on your body type. Pair them with a leather jacket or shacket for a casual look or a camel coat for a polished vibe.
I can't give up my skinny style jeans and these Jersey Denim Slim-Fit Jeggings are a good in-between. They are also incredibly comfortable and come in three washes. The Lightwash in my opinion is perfect for spring.
If you prefer to stay on trend, right now every one is embracing the Wide Leg Jean which is actually very flattering. I remember this style when it was in fashion in my teens!
These are such a lovely cut and hark back to the 70s-inspired wide-leg jeans. Here styled with a neat, structured cardigan you can see how you can blend your 'trendy' past with your current life.
The stretchy cotton-rich denim is comfy but smart and the wide leg style makes your legs look longer. What more could we want? These will be reached for again and again, dressed up with a blouse or down with a tee.
Wool Coat
This Wool-Look Unlined Double Breasted Coat is perfect for the colder months but adds a touch of elegance to any outfit. I've been throwing mine on before meetings or for looking put together at the school gates!
I have this in Light Camel, but there is now a gorgeous blue called 'Iris' if you want to enjoy a pop of spring colour. Team with your wide-leg jeans, a shirt and boots, an easy quick outfit which doesn't try to hard.
Knitwear
For transitioning from winter to spring, versatile knitwear is so important. This Stripe Textured Button Cardigan has a little Parisian appeal and in classic Breton stripes will work with almost anything in your wardrobe. If you prefer some colour you can have a similar style in Poppy red which is stunning and would look great with casual outfits or paired with black trousers.
Both have a textured knit with soft fabric and gold-look buttons which finish an outfit off nicely so it looks well put together.
Classic Oxford Shirt
Always a wardrobe staple, the classic Oxford shirt, these can be added to trousers or skirts and this style with the pretty stripe offers a feminine twist. A great shirt is an elegant item to keep in your capsule collection and is always in fashion. With breathable, 30% recycled cotton, it's also an eco-friendly option.
With a two-piece collar for comfort and smart attire, back pleat, and set-in sleeves, this is the ultimate work to evening outfit choice. We love the delicate Light Taupe option or the pale pink Poppy colour way.
Stylish Looks for Everyday and Beyond
Whether you’re running errands or heading out for a date night, here are some outfit ideas to inspire you:
Casual Day Outfits: Pair a wool jacket with skinny jeans and ankle boots for a laid-back vibe. Add a pop of colour with accessories or a scarf.
Chic Looks for Colder Months: Layer a trench coat over a knit dress and finish with long boots for a great balance of warmth and style.
Bold Fashion Trends: Experiment with a splash of red in your casual wear. A bold cardigan or shirt is a great way to add fun to your look.
Great Style Beyond the Trends
While fashion trends come and go, the best thing about being 40 is embracing what works for you. Some trends, like boyfriend style blazers can easily integrate into your wardrobe without feeling overdone. Others like leopard print trousers are possibly not a long term option! For a great quality find, check out classic styles in natural fabrics and breathable cotton. These last through the years, keep their shape and always look good.
