1. Focus on Heavier Scents

Fall and Winter is the time when we dress in warmer clothes and darker tones, our daily makeup gets heavier, and it’s not a surprise that the perfumes we wear should be reflective of this. A perfect perfume for colder months should be richer in tone and should have stronger dry notes. This is to ensure your fragrance lasts longer which can be tricky in the colder months since our skin tends to be less hydrated due to the crispness of the cold air.

2. Pick an Eau de Perfume instead of Eau de Toilette or Cologne

Most of the time consumers don’t know the difference between the three “Eau”s, luckily we’re here to teach you. The main distinction isn’t in the scent itself, it’s in the concentration of the oils used in the production process, with perfumes being the most concentrated from the bunch. What this basically means is that Eau de Perfumes have a better staying power. This is very important for the colder season because the scents fade away faster during these months. 3. Base Notes are the Key

Every perfume consists of three notes - top, middle and base (also known as dry) notes. Top notes of the perfume is what you smell after you first spritz it but as it’s drying out, middle and base notes come out to play. The notes which quickly disappear are top notes while base notes stay put for much longer. Notes which are commonly found in heavier fall fragrances are patchouli, sandalwood and vanilla. If you can’t identify the notes yourself, ask the clerks in the perfume shops, they will be happy to help. Also, a bit of research can go a long way if you’re willing to learn more.

4. Choose an Earthy Tone

While fresh and citrusy scents are the summer staples, woody, sweet and spicy fragrances are perfect for wintertime. If you’re having trouble with figuring out which is which, you’re at the right place. Woody or earthy scents are reminiscent of walking through woodland in the middle of autumn. They smell of falling leaves and crackling fire. The notes which fall into this category are patchouli, oakmoss and bergamot. A perfect example of a popular woody perfume is Opium by Yves Saint Laurent.

5. A Spicy Scent for Warming Up

If you’re a fan of warmer scents, go for something spicy. Spicy fragrances are also called oriental sometimes because of their exotic feel. These are a bit more easy to identify since most of us are familiar with common spices used during wintertime, like cardamom, allspice, nutmeg and, of course, cinnamon. One of the famous perfumes that fall in this category is Black Orchid by Tom Ford.

6. Smell Sweet Like a Christmas Cake

Another category perfect for winter is the one of sweet smells, or so-called gourmand fragrances. If you think about your favourite dessert while shopping for perfume, you won’t find it hard to figure out which one is in this category. They have a sweet feel and evoke the taste of different confectionery items like chocolate, caramel and even candy cane. Sherbet Rhubarb by Comme des Garcons is one of the typical examples of a sweet perfume.
