How to Care for Curls During the Summer

The summertime may bring you equal parts happiness and stress depending on how curly your hair is. It’s a delight to take advantage of the warm weather by donning curls in hairstyles that are less formal than the ones you often wear in the winter. However, frizz, unintended damage, and unruly curls are all potential side effects of this time of year.

Here are some recommendations for caring for curly hair to help you maintain the beautiful appearance of your curls during the hot and humid summer months.

1. DIY Your Spray

Inevitably, seawater and salt spray will transform the waves of your curls, making them more compact and elastic over time. One of the best ways to protect your hair from the chlorine in the pool while giving it a pre-pool treat at the same time is to soak it in clean water before you go swimming. Afterwards, apply some conditioner or oil to it.

Frist soaking your hair in clean water will reduce the amount of pool water that it absorbs from the chlorine. Wearing a swim hat will provide you with additional protection, and you should never allow chlorinated water to remain in your hair. Additionally, seawater has to be washed off since the salt in it might create dryness over time. Protect your hair from the drying effects by using an oil spray that’s great for creating defined bouncy curls.

2. Seal In Moisture

A crucial step in taking care of your curly hair throughout the summer is to use a product that will help lock in the moisture while reducing the amount of frizz in your hair. Look for a gel that enables hair to retain moisture and improve its natural curl pattern. The gel should have a glossy finish and syrupy consistency.

Some gels include chemicals that attract moisture, which helps to protect dry hair from becoming drier. Gels are also a great way to lock in the moisture that your leave-in conditioner provides. Leave-in conditioners that are rich in protein are fantastic for taming curls and preventing frizz in the process.

3. Take Care Around the Sun

If the sun can burn your skin, then you can be sure that it’ll do the same to your hair, too. Products such as shea butter and sesame oil have a natural ability to block the sun’s UV rays. And even though a great number of hair products assert that they can shield hair from the sun, these claims can simply be marketing hype unless the goods themselves have a sun protection factor (SPF) rating or include an element that is traditionally associated with sunscreen.

The easiest way to protect your curly hair from the sun is to cover it up with a fashionable hat or scarf if you are going to be outside for more than an hour. Apply some conditioner or a moisturizer to your hair, then roll it up into a bun or twist it, and then open your hairstyle up so that the sun can shine through.

4. Wash Together More Often

Before you style your hair, you should make sure that it is free of perspiration and other impurities by giving it a conditioning wash or even just a thorough water rinse. In fact, you may find that you need to wash your hair more regularly during the summer months to eliminate perspiration and revitalize the scalp.

The most important thing is to make sure that your hair is clean since buildup is one of the primary factors that contribute to frizz.

5. Fragile When Wet

When caring for curly hair, it is important to avoid doing things that might create split ends in the center of the hair shaft, such as pulling damp hair into a tight ponytail. Instead, smooth back damp hair with conditioner, followed by a drop or two of oil or gel. Because of the high temperatures throughout the summer, air drying happens much more quickly than at other times of the year.
