Earthborn Paints Review: Using Blue in a Child’s Bedroom
/Disclosure: AD, I was sent Earthborn Paints to review free of charge, however, all images and opinions are 100% my own.
Using blue in a child's bedroom can be a wonderful choice as it offers a range of positive feelings and benefits. Blue is often linked to calm moods and tranquillity. It can help create a soothing environment, especially when using lighter shades of blue. This can be beneficial for promoting a sense of relaxation and helping children unwind before bedtime.
Blue is often considered a gender-neutral colour, making it a versatile option for children's bedrooms. It can work well for both boys and girls, allowing for flexibility in room design and decor.
Blue is my daughter’s favourite colour and she has been nudging me to get on and decorate her room with this shade!
We were thrilled when Earthborn Paints asked if we would like to use their paints for our project. With a special focus on their blue hues. This was the perfect excuse to finally paint my daughter’s bedroom and try products with a strong commitment to the environment.
Earthborn paints are a popular choice for environmentally conscious individuals who prioritise sustainability, health, and high-quality finishes and here’s why…
Why Earthborn Paints?
Earthborn paints pride themselves on being different and having approached eco-friendly alternatives to paint since they were founded in 2002. This is no trend for them but a way of life.
They want to make paints which are better for the planet, your home and your health. There is no scrimping on quality though and we have seen this for ourselves. Their products are excellent and offer high performance even with using environmentally friendly ingredients and technologically advanced manufacturing processes.
Not only that, they have been awarded the first UK licence of the EU Ecolabel for Indoor Paints and Varnishes. And produced a range of environmentally friendly designer breathable paints with natural and eco-friendly ingredients.
They contain minimal VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) or are completely VOC-free, reducing harmful emissions and minimising air pollution. Being non-toxic and free from harmful chemicals, means they are safe to use at home or in commercial and educational environments.
The paints have minimal odours, (I couldn’t smell the paint at all within the same day of using them). This makes them a suitable choice for those with sensitivities, children, and pets.
Choosing the blues
So now for the fun part. How did we choose our shades of blue?
My daughter’s room is quite dark naturally and has one wall of very cute dark blue wallpaper with animals which we wanted to keep. We found several shades of Earthborn blues which would complement the wallpaper. It was very hard to choose!
Eventually, we decided on two colours, Teacup which is a very light blue, pale and bright with a slight grey to it. This is a very ‘grownup’ classic colour.
Secondly we chose Polka Dot, which I am a little in love with, I may have to use it again in another area of the house! This is a Wedgewood blue and quite chalky. A very sophisticated yet versatile shade. I can see it working well in a kitchen or sitting room.
We chose the Lifestyle finish which suits a child’s bedroom as it’s hard-wearing and low-sheen.
If you are unsure of any colours you can try a sample pot first to help you decide on the right shade for you.
Design
If you’re planning on painting each wall all over in one colour it should be quite straightforward. However, we are never ones to go for the easy route!
My daughter really wanted a half wall design also known as a two-tone wall. These can be a creative and appealing choice if you can’t decide on one shade.
Painting a half wall creates a visually interesting focal point in a room. It breaks up the monotony of a single wall colour and adds depth and dimension to the space.
I used a laser level so I could easily get the half way line around the wall. It was quite a fun tool to use! I would invest in one of these, as it makes your job much quicker and easier.
For us, painting the upper half a light colour makes the room appear brighter but you still have the option for a deeper, darker colour on the lower half. The lighter colour reflects more light and makes the space feel more open and spacious.
You can also use a half-wall paint design to visually separate different areas within a larger room. This could work well in an open-plan living space.
As a parent I can see that with a two-tone wall, you can easily touch up or repaint a smaller area if there are any scuffs, marks, or stains, instead of having to repaint the entire wall.
Tricky bits - the scallop edge
Of course we couldn’t just stop there! Having seen the pretty scallop edge designs on half walls my daughter persuaded me to give this a go.
This a decorative edge of semicircular shapes, resembling the scalloped edge of a seashell. You can add this to the top line of your design once you have painted the walls. It does add a charming touch and wasn’t too difficult.
I bought a wipeable stencil online and then taped it gently with masking tape to the wall. I used a small paintbrush but you can use a little foam roller, to carefully apply the paint within the scallop shapes. It’s best not to overload the brush with paint and dab on whilst holding the stencil flush to the wall.
The stencil itself will need to be wiped or left to dry for a few minutes each time you move it as otherwise bits of paint transfer to the side which faces the wall.
Allow the paint to dry completely before touching or using the surface. Afterwards I then added a second little coat with a steady hand.
Remember when using masking tape, frogtape or a stencil, remove them whilst the paint is still wet. If you let the tape/stencil dry, it will pull off the paint underneath as well when you remove it.
