The Best Hobbies for Women in their 30s
Entering your 30s or 40s as a woman or a mom can be daunting. You may have given a lot of yourself to others or your children in the previous years. It can be hard to consider what your needs are and what you would like to take up as a new hobby or new skill. We can get out of the habit of thinking how to use our free time and that we should value it as our own and make it a priority.
I know when I've been asked before what my interests are; it's not always easy to come up with a list of hobbies after I've thought about the people I look after and what they all enjoy. Also when I see people talk about this on social media I think I don't have any free time! However, we all spend an incredible about of hours scrolling, texting and emailing. Is all of that really necessary? Or could you find a great hobby that uses your time in the best way for you and your mental health?
We are sure you can do this, so where to begin? A great way to find what might suit you is to check out what other women or moms are doing. Chances are there's someone out there just like you and what works for them could be your hobby idea or even a side hustle!
I've created a list of fun hobbies and new things which might interest you, from an online chess game to learning a language! If you don't want to leave your comfort zone and learn to do magic tricks that's fine! The key is to find what makes you happy even if that's a night in with a good book. So have a read and give these a try!
Whatever gets you moving
Even if you are not normally active, finding something you can do which moves your body is so important. This affects our moods, how happy we feel, our identity, and much more. Whatever you do find an exercise to suit you. From running, dancing, to tennis or boxercise, even a long walk is a great exercise, focus on what makes you feel buzzing afterwards. I always find it helps to do it first thing in the morning after the school run.
Enjoying the fresh air while you workout is a great mood booster. Playing tennis is perfect as you keep fit, get outdoors and there’s a social aspect to it. Make sure you have all the right equipment before starting a sport such as buying the correct tennis shoes for women from a store such as tennisHQ.co.uk.
Depending on your exercise of choice, you can also do it listening to music, a podcast, (my favourite thing) or focus on the sounds of nature. If I haven't run for a while I go back to the app 'Couch to 5k', it's so helpful to follow their instructions rather than try and pace myself!
Playing games
Playing is something that we generally don't think is important as adults, but we couldn't be more wrong. This pastime relaxes us and provides a means of escape. Think about what you loved in high school? Or even when you were younger? Additionally, engaging in social card games like Spades can enhance these benefits by fostering connections and camaraderie among players, further enriching the experience and promoting strategic teamwork.
Board games and online gaming is becoming more popular for all ages after the past 2 years of staying home and keeping safe. Stress levels were higher and understandably new people have flocked to play games both with their families and online.
I've had a real nostalgia for playing the classic video games we grew up with such as Bubble Shooter, Solitaire, Pacman and the Hearts card game. These are so simple and less taxing than some of the games produced today. Playing them online (often for free) means you can easily fit in a game between work or home life. While I’m playing, I can only concentrate on this and it takes my mind off the day to day pressures of modern life.
My husband has taken up online chess during the pandemic and is completely hooked. Again he can fit in a match between other activities but then he feels like he also did something pleasurable for himself.
Learn a new language
Have you always promised yourself you would learn a language? In the new world of Skype and Zoom lessons are everywhere. Even if travel is only just opening up we can still travel in our imagination. Finally, get to grips with that schoolgirl French or start Spanish as it's the next big thing! Either way, if you're willing, there's a course or an app to help you.
Prioritise your mental health
I neglect this part of me so much and I've found that anything which isn't actively managed in your mental health creeps into your physical. So use your free time in a new way and have a goal to look after yourself.
Having a journal is an easy way to start. You can note down how you feel each day, your thoughts, and your feelings.
Even sending short ‘Stories about my life’ to friends and family can be therapeutic and is a great way to remember what you’ve been up to. This creates greater self-awareness and deeper connections over time.
I choose to use a gratitude journal and it dramatically changes how I feel about my week. You can do these online or treat yourself to some beautifully bound notebooks.
Vegetable gardens
There are so many benefits to doing some gardening. Fresh air, carrying out tasks using your hands, which frees up your mind. You're surrounded by nature, noticing the seasons and being present in the moment.
There's a great sense of satisfaction in growing and nurturing things. It's up to you what you plant, however, I get the most out of making a vegetable or herb garden. You share the fruits of your labour with others, maybe the herbs go into your next pasta sauce. The cycle of sowing, growing, and eating is a wonderful part of life.
Take an online course
Have you always loved Interior design? Did you ever consider that some passion of yours could be studied more fully? Just because you're an adult doesn't mean you can't learn a new skill or even make some extra money.
There are courses widely available on every topic you can imagine now. Most can be done online around your current commitments. Maybe this could be the moment you choose to take a course and change your career? Or perhaps it could set you up for when your children go to school and you can take a full-time job? Should you wish to of course.
Courses are available through companies such as Udemy and Teachable but there are many more places to find them. Start following the hashtags of topics that interest you on Instagram and you will find others sharing their knowledge.
You’d be surprised by the amount of courses you can do online. The PMHNP online programs allow you to pursue a master’s degree in nursing, for example. The world is your oyster with this approach and you could end up launching a new career with the process.
Going from a hobby to a new career may seem unbelievable, but it’s more straightforward than you could think.
Jewelry making
This is something I love to do. I have a friend who runs jewelry workshops but we live too far from each other now. I found her classes so calming. You sit and chat to other women, work on your pieces with help from your instructor. Drink lots of coffee and then marvel that you managed to come up with something you would actually wear.
I always go home happy. Look up jewelry designers or silversmiths in your area, often they run similar classes or day experiences.
Volunteer
If you get the most from giving back think about the causes closest to your heart. Charities and food banks are always struggling for help, unfortunately. If you can give one morning of your time they are very grateful. If it's more furry friends you are interested in, contact your local animal shelter. Many pets bought in lockdown have been returned to shelters and they are at full capacity. Your time and help will be sorely needed.
Volunteering is a wonderful way for women to make a positive impact in their communities and beyond. Here are some volunteering opportunities that may be of interest to women:
1. What works for me
Cross stitch: I’ve just started trying cross stitch after receiving a pattern for Christmas. Cross stitch is a wonderful hobby that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. It offers a creative outlet and a way to create beautiful, handmade designs. Here are some steps to get started with cross stitch:
Gather Supplies: To start cross stitching, you'll need a few basic supplies. These include:
Aida fabric: This fabric has evenly spaced holes that make it easy to stitch on. Choose a fabric with a suitable count, such as 14-count or 16-count, which refers to the number of stitches per inch.
Embroidery hoop or frame: This helps keep the fabric taut and makes stitching easier.
Embroidery floss: Choose a variety of colors that you'll use for stitching. Floss typically comes in six-strand skeins, and you can separate the strands depending on the thickness you want.
Embroidery needles: Select needles with a sharp point and a large enough eye to accommodate the floss.
Scissors: Use small, sharp scissors for cutting floss and trimming threads.
2. Choose a Pattern: Look for cross stitch patterns that appeal to you. There are countless patterns available online or in craft stores, ranging from simple designs to intricate artwork. You can start with a small and straightforward pattern as you build your skills.
3. Prepare the Fabric: Cut the fabric slightly larger than the desired finished size. If necessary, finish the edges by folding and stitching or using a fray-check solution to prevent fraying.
4. Follow the Pattern: Transfer the pattern onto the fabric using one of several methods. You can use a water-soluble pen or pencil to trace the design or use a technique called "counted cross stitch," where you follow a grid and stitch according to the pattern's instructions.
5. Start Stitching: Thread your needle with a strand of embroidery floss, and tie a knot at the end. Begin stitching by making small, diagonal stitches that form an "X." Follow the pattern, working one color at a time and completing each stitch before moving on to the next.
6. Finishing: Once you've completed the stitching, trim any excess fabric and iron the finished piece on the reverse side to remove any creases or wrinkles.
7. Frame or Display: You can frame your completed cross stitch in a hoop, mount it on a board, or choose other creative display options, such as stitching it onto a pillow, tote bag, or clothing item.
Take your time, be patient with yourself, and have fun with the process. As you gain experience, you can explore more complex designs and techniques. Happy stitching!
Remember, hobbies should be enjoyable and allow you to recharge and pursue your interests. Find activities that align with your passions and bring a sense of fulfillment, even if you can only dedicate small pockets of time to them.

4. Consider Your Schedule and Resources: Assess your available time and resources as a stay-at-home mom. Determine how much time you can allocate to your business and identify the resources, such as equipment, software, or support, that you may need.
5. Set Up Your Home Office: Create a dedicated space in your home where you can work and run your business. Organize your workspace, ensure you have the necessary equipment, and establish a routine that allows you to work efficiently.
6. Legal and Financial Considerations: Determine the legal structure of your business (e.g., sole proprietorship, LLC) and register your business with the appropriate authorities. Set up a separate bank account for your business finances to keep them separate from personal finances.

10. Adapt and Evolve: Stay open to feedback, adapt to changes in the market, and continuously improve your business. As a stay-at-home mom, your circumstances and priorities may evolve, so be flexible and willing to make adjustments to your business as needed.
Starting a business as stay at home moms requires dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to learn and grow. With proper planning and a passion for your chosen venture, you can create a successful business that allows you to balance your family life and professional aspirations.
I hope you've realised that there are so many new hobbies you could be trying. Many more than I've mentioned here, I hope you begin focusing on yourself and find the perfect one for you. If all of that is too much trouble maybe take up wine tasting classes with a friend!
If in doubt, some of my favorite hobbies include trying an online tutorial for something totally new like playing a musical instrument, having a go on sewing machines or even just searching "great hobbies" over on the internet where you'll find youtube videos to help you choose the right hobby for your creative outlet! The best thing about it is that trying out worthwhile hobbies can be so much fun.
