How to Support Your Child with their Cognitive Development

When it comes to cognitive development our children need to pick up the skills fast. As a toddler they will begin this journey, through plenty of life lessons, exploration of basic academic skills, and more. But there are also ways you can strengthen these skills so that they are ready to use them in different environments and scenarios. Here are some ways you can help your child with their cognitive development that this preschool in Essex recommends.

Focus on particular areas of cognitive development

There are a few areas of cognitive development to explore. For example, you could spend some time looking into ways that will directly support your child’s critical thinking skills, before moving on to approaches that support their decision making skills. If you are able to focus on certain areas then you can help your child with more unique opportunities and activities.

Use games

Games are not only fun for children but challenge a lot of their cognitive capabilities. It means that your child is going to be a lot more motivated to pick up new skills, which can give them much needed confidence as well.

Board games are a common activity you can bring out on those rainy days. It’s a good time to help your child learn about how to think about the next move for themselves. It can also give your child the chance to outsmart you - even if it’s forced - so that they can see the progress they have made for themselves.

Read books

Having a healthy variety of books to choose from can help children feel comfortable in their literacy skills. A lot of this has to be developed through their cognitive skills as well. Ensure that the books they pick up become slightly more advanced as they learn new words and phrases, as well as when their grammar improves.

So there are many ways you can help your child with their cognitive development. It is a good approach to keep in mind as your child develops their skills for the future, as well as being used as a solid foundation for new skills.
