Helping Your Child Prepare for the School Bus
The school bus can be a ball of stress for children if they often get upset and overwhelmed about large groups of people, or if they’re starting a new school or entering high school. Here is some advice from this prep school in Yorkshire on how to conquer the school commute with no worries.
See if your child can walk to the bus stop with a friend
More often than not you live close to someone else whose child goes to the same school as yours. Let them walk down together and sit on the bus together so that they’re not alone during the journey.
It can be daunting for children to decide where to sit on the bus, let alone the rest of the trip, so this eliminates any decision making needed on the bus. Alternatively, see if your child can make a friend with someone who goes on the same route at least some of the way to make them feel at ease.
Make sure the bus journey is added into their routine
If they know that they have to get ready in the morning for their journey then they'll feel more motivated to get ready on time and remain focused. It also gives your child a chance to mentally prepare themselves for the bus journey and alleviate any stress they had before leaving the house.
Give your child something to look forward to when they return home
If they really are struggling with their bus journeys in the morning then give them something to make them smile when they return from school. It will give them some motivation to tackle the next day if they are scared of returning to the bus, but you can also make them feel at ease by showing your support.
Above all else it's good to monitor your child as they head on to school. There may be a lot of different things for them to manage, but it can be something they can learn to control and make them feel empowered once they tackle the morning and afternoon bus commutes.
