Getting a Kitten? 3 Things to Buy First

If you’ve decided that it’s time to get a pet and that a kitten will be the perfect new addition to your family, then the next step involves figuring out what you need to get for them. Kittens are definitely lower maintenance compared to puppies, but you will still need to make sure that they have everything that they need to have a happy and healthy life with you. Whether you have recently picked up a new baby kitten to bring home or are going to collect your new furry friend soon, it’s always good to have a shopping list of the things you’ll need to make sure that your home is a comfortable and safe space for them. It’s ideal to find your new pet at a rescue home and there are times of year when there will be more kittens available than others, so put your name on the rescue centre’s waiting list!

Food

Kittens are growing, so you’ll probably find that your new baby eats quite a lot. Nutrition is important at this age for cats, so make sure that you are feeding them a healthy, nutrient-packed food designed for growing kittens. You can find healthy cat food at Reveal Pet Food. Kittens can eat both dry and wet food, and it’s a good idea to feed a combination of both. Raw feeding is also worth considering if you want a more natural solution for your feline baby. Don’t forget to make sure that your kitten has constant access to clean water, too. You may want to get a water fountain as many cats prefer to drink from a running water source rather than out of a bowl.

Litter Box

Cats are very clean by nature and prefer to have a designated area where they can do their business privately. A litter box with cat litter is an essential if you are bringing a new kitten home. The good news is that you probably won’t have to litter train the kitten as their mothers usually teach them how to use a litter box from a young age. However, it’s a good idea to make sure that your kitten knows where the litter box or tray is, and how to get in it depending on the style you get. Be sure to get a litter box that is the right size for your kitten – you can always upgrade as they get bigger.

Scratching Posts

Cats need to scratch to keep their claws in good condition. And this is something your kitten will start doing from a young age. If you don’t provide posts and other toys like scratching mats for them to use, then chances are that your furniture and wallpaper will get wrecked very quickly. Having scratching posts and pads available ensures that you can easily divert your kitten to the right spot if you catch them digging their claws into your sofa. Get plenty of toys for your kitten to play with, too – you can play with them to help build your bond.

Bringing a new kitten home is always an exciting experience. To make sure that your new cat can grow up happy and healthy in your home, you will need a few essentials.
