Examine snowflakes up close and personal.
Chill solid, dark coloured fabric in the freezer before you start to avoid warm fabric melting snowflakes while you observe.
Move the fabric outside into the falling snow to catch snowflakes.
Observe up close with magnifying glasses.
If it is very cold use a camera to get up close macro shots of the snowflakes to observe indoors.
Experiment
Try observing water in all three states of matter.
To do this grab icicles from outside.
Place in a pan and turn the heat on medium.
Heat the ice while discussing how the ice is solid.
As it melts observe the liquid state of water.
Finally when the water comes to a boil observe the stream flowing from the pot to see water in its gas form.
Nature
Study how animals keep warm with a simple activity to take a hands-on look at the insulation.
Place hot water in a bottle or glass jar sealing shut.
Challenge your children to use items from around the house to insulate the water and place them outside.
After an hour check to see how warm the water still is.
Repeat making note of changes and what the final result is for each major change.
Exercise
Go for a walk in the snow and look for animal tracks.
Take photos of each animal track you find so you can discuss what they belong to.
Use Google reverse image search if you struggle to figure out what something is.
Download our guide to animal tracks below!
We hope these simple experiments keep your children entertained this Winter!
