The Culture in Qatar

Although Qatar has been modernized in a number of ways, it is still a traditional Muslim country. Locals expect the expats to respect their traditions, cultures and religion and act and dress appropriately when in public.

In Qatar, daily life is dictated by the Islamic culture and calendar. Pork products are not allowed to be consumed in restaurants and alcohol is restricted to hotel bars. One of the hardest adjustments to make is that the school week runs from Sunday to Thursday. Friday is the Islamic holy day, which means that most businesses and stores close until the evening. The church of Christ also holds its services on this day.

The Clothing in Qatar

Similar to men in the Gulf region, most local men choose to wear the traditional white robes called thobes. Alongside this, they will also wear a plain white headdress. Some of the local women in Qatar wear black abayas. Some women chose to wear elaborately decorated abayas but this is an entirely personal preference. They also cover their heads with a hijab.

Expat women are not expected to wear a hijab or cover their heads, but they are expected to cover their knees, shoulders and cleavage when in public. Not wearing the correct clothing can lead to you being asked to leave an area, so it’s definitely worth knowing the rules. However, bikinis are allowed at five-star hotel beaches.

Visiting Dubai from Doha

Traveling from Doha to Dubai can be done by air, road, or rail. Here are the different transportation options available:

1. Flight: The fastest and most convenient way to travel from Doha to Dubai is by air. Several airlines operate daily flights between Hamad International Airport in Doha and Dubai International Airport. Flight duration is approximately one hour, making it a quick and efficient mode of transportation.

2. Road: If you prefer a scenic road trip, you can drive from Doha to Dubai. The distance between the two cities is around 560 kilometers, and the journey takes approximately 6 to 7 hours, depending on traffic and the route you choose. You can either drive through Saudi Arabia (requires appropriate visas and permissions) or take the longer route via Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

3. Bus: There are bus services available that operate between Doha and Dubai. These services are typically operated by private companies and offer a more affordable option compared to flying. The journey duration can vary, usually taking around 10 to 12 hours, considering immigration procedures and occasional stops along the way.

4. Train: As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, there is no direct train service connecting Doha and Dubai. However, there are plans to develop a high-speed rail network called the Gulf Railway that would link the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, including Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Keep an eye on the latest developments regarding this project.

It's important to check current travel requirements, visa regulations, and any COVID-19-related restrictions before planning your trip. Always ensure you have the necessary travel documents, such as a valid passport and appropriate visas, for both Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Overall, Doha is a vibrant and dynamic city that combines modernity with traditional Arab culture, making it a fascinating destination for tourists and business travelers alike. From traditional souqs to wandering around the city center, this is a great place to explore.
