People choose to adopt for many reasons, from not being able to have their own children to wanting to offer a child a home and a loving family.

If you wish to adopt a child, consider seeking independent advice and perhaps even legal advice from an adoption solicitors. They will additionally be able to help you through the process of adopting a child.

To learn more about the seven reasons why adoption could be the right choice for you, keep reading…

1. You Love Children

There are some people who are just born to be parents, and perhaps being one is their calling. There are those who automatically have those maternal and paternal instincts with all children, and you just know that they’re going to be a fabulous parent one day. If this is you, you love children and you want to have a family, then adopting a child in need could really be the right parenting route for you.

There are currently 70,000 children living in care, and this number only continues to creep up on a regular basis. While not all these children can be adopted, a vast majority of them can and crave some regularity and love in their lives.

2. You were adopted as a child

If you were in care yourself as a child, it’s likely that you understand how challenging it can be living in a care home or being shuffled around to different foster families. Or perhaps you were adopted, spent many happy years in a caring and loving home, and want to provide the same happiness and love to a child in need like you once were.

3. You Enjoy Giving

Like with people that have those parental instincts, there are others who enjoy giving. They care about other people and their happiness more than their own. If you are a caring and giving person, you could be the ideal candidate to adopt.

4. You Have the Resources

It’s understandable that not everyone can afford to adopt a child. There is financial support available, but children are expensive. In 2020, CPAG reported that it costs £185,413 to raise from birth until 18, including housing costs. But, being a parent doesn’t stop once they hit 18.

If you are in the fortunate position to have available resources, such as wealth, spare rooms in your home, free time, etc., adoption is going to be less challenging for you than for someone who may not have these resources available.

5. You Can’t Have children

Unfortunately, there are many individuals and couples out there who are unable to have children of their own for many reasons, including infertility, being in a same-sex couple, etc. Adoption could be an alternative route to take. You can adopt children of all ages, from those a couple of days old to children slightly older.

6. Your Biological Children Are Grown Up

Your home and heart can understandably feel empty when your children leave the family home. You’ve spent many years creating valuable memories, and then time quickly passes, and you no longer have little children running around causing havoc. Why not consider providing a loving home to a child or children in need, filling that void and extending your family?

7. Adoptive parents can be anyone

You don’t need to fit into specific criteria if you want to adopt. So long as you are over the age of 21, have the right to remain in the UK, and have financial means, the likelihood of you being able to adopt is high.

So, whether you’re heterosexual, homosexual, have pink crazy hair or live by yourself, there’s nothing to say you can’t. If you hit the general eligibility and can provide time, understanding, support and care to a child, consider adopting a child.

8. Adoption can be a wonderful thing

There’s no doubt that adoption is a wonderful thing in life and can be so rewarding. When you adopt, you are providing a child in need with the support, love and care they need to develop.
