3 Tips To Help Your Dog Sleep Well

From a cockapoo to a spaniel all dogs need sleep to ensure they are fit and healthy. Unlike humans your pet pooch needs more sleeping hours per day, from 12 to 15 to be exact. This means that when you are making plans for the day ahead it is important to consider resting time, whether you plan to travel, walk or simply chill around the home there’s a lot you can do to ensure your furry pal has the perfect place for a snooze.

The image below from Lords and Labradors shares some key tips and considerations for preparing your dog for a great sleep.

Bed or Crate?

If you have a pup then introducing a crate can be a great idea as it provides their own little sleeping quarters as well as their own space. Many older dogs that have not been introduced to a crate from a young age may find them less appealing, and this is fine they may prefer a hard or soft dog bed. Basically, whether you choose a bed or crate for your dog is up to you, as long as it is their space and they find it peaceful and comfy.

The Sleeping Spot

As well as ensuring the best comfort for your dog via a bed or crate you must also be sure they are comfortable. One way to provide comfort is to give your pup their personal space. Many people have had to get creative here by making dog homes under the stairs, building it into their kitchen area or even their bedroom.

Some key things to consider when searching for the best sleeping spot are…

  • Noise – is the area quite or does noise echo through this area of the home?

  • Light – ensure windows are covered by black-out blinds and if you keep a light on at night then choose one that isn’t directly within your dog’s sight.

  • Their Space – remember a dog’s sleeping space should be for them only and not shared with their owners! Pet owners often mistakes and one of them is sharing our beds with our doggy pals and this can become a problem if they start to only want to sleep when next to you. This can result in a lack of sleep and anxiety when not sleeping with you.

The Night-time Routine

As well as the sleeping space and surrounding sounds the things we do before heading off to bed can have a big impact on how hyperactive your pet is – just like children!

You are obviously not going to read your dog a bedtime story but using calm tones can be positive for creating a relaxing atmosphere. Winding down activity and letting your pet out for the toilet at the same time each night can also have positive impacts. Another key tip is to keep feeding times the same each day to help create a manageable routine for your lifestyle and ultimately your pet.

All of these tips will ensure your dog has a great night’s sleep and by creating a safe space will also allow for amazing daytime naps.
