3 Things to do in Malcesine, Lake Garda
We get lots of enquiries about which is the best town to stay in Lake Garda; so who better to ask than someone who has a personal connection there!
This week we have a great guide to Malcesine on the Eastern Shore of Lake Garda by Lifestyle Blogger, Violet Glenton.
Here are her recommendations…
Visit Castello Scaligero
Ok, maybe I’m biased as I got married here but the Castello Scaligero is one of the most beautiful sights in all of Italy. However, a Castle with such strong History (and incredible views) is well worth a visit on your trip to Lake Garda. I won’t give away all but just for a taste…
The history of this special castle dates back to the last centuries of the first millennium BC It was then destroyed in 590AD and subsequently rebuilt. It’s lasted through many a change of hand from Venetians to French. It got its name under the occupation of Alberto della Scala’s and his family's control from 1277 to 1387 and after a few more occupational changes it finally became a national monument on the 22nd August 1902.
In the last decade, it has become a popular tourist attraction and go-to wedding venue for many. You can explore some local historical artefacts as well as take in the beautiful views over the lakes. There are often ceremonies taking place on the top terrace so you may just spot a bride on her trip down the aisle.
Tickets range from Adults € 6,00 to reduced ( over 65 and from 14 to 18 years old) € 5,00. Children are free up to the age of 5.
Take a Cable Car up Monte Baldo
If you want to get a brilliant view of the area you’re in and truly enjoy the beauty of Lake Garda then it is well worth taking a cable car trip up to the top of Monte Baldo.
On a clear day, you can see all the way from Riva to Sirmione. There are scenic walks at the top. It takes around 15-30 minutes to reach the summit (depending on how busy the attraction is that day) and the views on the way up are INCREDIBLE.
You’ll find beautiful 360 views and hand gliders taking off once you reach the top.
Be warned though, the view can quickly change when the clouds are lower so try and choose a clear day.
The trip costs roughly € 22 Adult for a roundtrip.
Hop on a Ferry from Malcesine to Limone
When on the lakes, it would be a crime to not travel by water and explore other areas via ferry. With frequent trips departing every 30 minutes or so it’s almost impossible not to take up this terrific opportunity to explore another beautiful town in this area.
Limone, which got its name from the Italian word for Lemon was once renowned for growing citrus fruits. Now, a quirky little area with authentic shops and bars, it’s a wonderful spot to have a day out. You can get some amazing gelato here or go for a dip in the beautiful lakefront spots that are well known for swimming.
If you like visiting churches, you’ll find several characteristic ones here, including a chapel in Chiesa di San Pietro that dates back to the 12th century.
If you’re visiting between June and September, take advantage of the free walking tours put on by the Gruppo Alpino di Limon.
Ferry crossings cost € 9 for a round day trip.
I hope this post inspires you to explore this beautiful area of Lake Garda. I’m absolutely desperate to go back once possible again!
